BACKGROUND: The internet is an important source of up-to-date medical information. Although several studies in different countries have explored the extent to which health science students use the computer and the internet, few researches are available on this subject in Nigeria. The aim of this study was to assess the uptake of computer and internet by health science students studying in the country. METHODS: One hundred and eighty three first year medical and nursing students of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria, completed a-25 item questionnaire during routine Library Orientation Program in the medical library. The EPI-Info software was used for data analysis. RESULTS: The mean ages for medical students and the student nurses were 22 and 24.6 years respectively. Overall, 42.6% of the entire sample could use the computer, 57.4% could not. While more than half (58%) of the medical students are computer literate, majority (75.9%) of the student nurses are not. Slightly more than two thirds (60.7%) of the entire students had ever used the internet, 33. 9% had not. E-mail was the most popular of internet services used by the students (76.4%) and the cyber café was the common place where students had accessed these services. The students' mean scores on a 15-point perceived self-efficacy scale for internet-related tasks was 3.8 for medical and 0.7 for nursing students (p = 0.00). Students who are computer literate had superior mean scores (4.8) than those without (0.6) (p = 0.000). CONCLUSION: First year clinical and nursing students in Ibadan Nigeria have not fully utilised the opportunity that the use of computer and internet offer for medical education. Improved efforts such as inclusion of computer education in medical and nursing curricular and establishment of computer laboratories are required to increase the student's access to computers and internet.

While Science teaching and learning is changing at an amazing pace in developed countries, same cannot be said of developing countries. Nigeria secondary school classrooms have remained 'chalk and board' affair with students seated in rows copying notes. In a developing country such as Nigeria, teachers need sustained support from colleagues at tertiary level who are compliant with the new technologies to help them learn how best to integrate technology into their teaching. In this paper, we describe a study that employed quasi experiment of the non-equivalent control group design. 150 senior secondary two (SS2) students of two intact classes randomly selected from two schools were assigned one to experimental and other to control. . Training was given to a regular teacher of Biology that taught experimental group while the control group teacher did not receive training but given a template on the conduct of the study. Two instruments for data collection were Biology achievement test and Interest scale. Mean and Standard Deviation and ANCOVA were used for data analysis. Result revealed that group exposed to lessons with Audio-visual technological contents integrated achieved higher in test scores than the group not exposed to. It was recommended that classroom teachers keep pace with development trend by learning and using new technologies (Audio-visual) in instructional delivery.

This study focused on developing an instrument for assessing Senior High School students Physics learning self-efficacy beliefs. An instrument known as PLSE was administered on-site and in-person. The PLSE was tested on 290 final year Senior High School Physics students. Prior to this, the initial scale was administered to 60 Senior High School Physics students after validation by seven experts of Science educators. The PCA extracted four factors with loadings ranging from 0.588 to 0.889. The four factors were Physics Practical, Every Application of concepts, High-Order Thinking Skills and Physics Content. The calculated Average Variance Extracted (AVE), and Composite Reliability of the PLSE items were also found to range from 0.540 to 0.718 and 0.823 to 0.927 respectively. The subsequent reliability results showed excellent internal reliability for each of the sub-scales with Corrected Item-total Correlation (CIC) values, ranging between 0.571 and 0.752. Validity, and reliability assessments revealed accepted threshold cut-off of Average Variance Extracted (AVE), Composite Reliability (CR,) and Cronbach's Alpha coefficient. This paper suggests that the current proposed Physics learning instrument represent a reliable research scale to measure Senior High students Physics learning self-efficacy belief.

This paper describes a qualitative study of how to improve females’ involvement in the learning of physics at the tertiary level. The study was conducted at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and some select Senior High Schools (SHS) in the Cape Coast Metropolis, Ghana. Participants for the study were undergraduate female non-physics students, undergraduate female physics students, SHS final year female science students and physics lecturers and tutors. The study found that majority of female students do not pursue physics at higher levels of education because they perceived the subject as difficult, irrelevant, and one that has no or limited career opportunities. The participants, however, were optimistic that female participation in physics can be improved if necessary steps were taken to erase the widely held perceptions that have been associated with the study of the subject and its related career opportunities.

Abstract: This study investigated the factors influencing female students’ academic success in Physics and examined gender differences in performance at Navrongo Senior High School. Using an explanatory sequential mixed-method design, the research combined qualitative interviews with quantitative analysis of standardized Physics test scores. Quantitative results showed that although female students slightly outperformed their male counterparts (mean scores of 70.6 and 69.7, respectively), the difference was not statistically significant (t = –0.36, p = 0.717, Cohen’s d = –0.066). This finding suggests that gender alone does not determine performance in Physics. Qualitative findings highlighted the critical role of effective study habits, positive attitudes toward Physics, classroom participation, teacher support, and peer collaboration in achieving academic success. Female students particularly emphasized the importance of an inclusive and supportive classroom environment that fosters confidence and engagement in a traditionally male-dominated field. The study challenges stereotypes about girls’ participation in Physics and underscores the influence of social relationships, teaching strategies, and personal motivation on achievement. It concludes that promoting female success in Physics requires collective efforts centered on inclusive practices, responsive teaching, and sustained encouragement. The study recommends promoting structured study habits, improving students’ perceptions of Physics through positive messaging, enhancing engagement, and expanding experiential learning opportunities to support equitable achievement.

Abstract: This study investigated the factors influencing female students' academic success in Physics and looked at gender differences in performance in Navrongo SHS. In order to gain a deeper understanding of performance patterns, the study employed a mixed-method explanatory sequential design, combining qualitative interviews with quantitative data of standardised Physics test scores. According to quantitative findings, although female students outperformed male students by a small margin (0.92) mean difference which was not statistically significant though worth noting. This result implies that performance in physics is not determined by gender. Qualitative results demonstrated how important it is for students to have good study habits, a favourable opinion of physics, active participation in class, teacher support, and peer cooperation to succeed academically. The voices of female students emphasised the value of a welcoming and inclusive classroom where they can thrive in a field that has historically been dominated by men. They also indicated that, peer support, teacher support, fair opportunities, and meaningful engagement were very key to their success in Physics. The study dispels the myth that girls are less likely to pursue physics and confirms that social connections, pedagogical techniques, and individual initiative all play a vital role in female academic success. It comes to the conclusion that encouraging female success in physics calls for teamwork and is typified by inclusive practices, responsive instruction, and ongoing motivation.
